Youth Introductory Course

Continuing youth students may participate in the Youth II course that is held on Saturday from 9:30-10:15 a.m. at the discretion of the instructor.

Introductory courses guide beginners through dojo etiquette, warm-up exercises, basic Aikido movements, and techniques with partners. No previous training in martial arts or sports is required. Beginning students are asked to wear loose fitting clothing such as sweats or comfortable training wear that cover the knees and elbows. The introductory classes may be repeated if desired.

Aikido is based on the martial arts of the Japanese Samurai and includes both physical and mental training. It is an invigorating and rewarding physical activity with smooth, graceful movements, pins, and falls that can be learned by almost anyone. Aikido provides an opportunity to participate in a challenging fitness activity in a non-competitive environment. Aikido is not a fighting art, rather, students work together as partners to create harmonious techniques and movements. Yoshokai Aikido was developed by Kushida-sensei through 40 years of training, study, and teaching; and is headquartered at the Genyokan dojo in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
